PEARL HIGH 70s DECADE PICNIC !!!
(WITH a DJ ON SITE)
PLEASE READ THE INFO BELOW THOROUGHLY & COMPLETELY !
The Pearl High 70s Decade Group invite all Classes of the Pearl High 70s Decade of Nashville TN, along with “any” PHS alums that choose to attend to our Pearl High 70s Decade Summer Picnic which will be at Hadley Park on July 6, 2024 from 12:00-6:00pm at Shelter #1. Shelter # 1 is next to the Recreation Center & Playground (which is also near the tennis courts). We will have a celebration of summer as well as a celebration of our Pearl High Alma mater’s strong history & heritage. We invite All Pearl High Alums to come out to celebrate with us and we encourage you to bring a grill or some food you prepared at home (& water) for yourself and / or the group you come with if you like.
There will be a secure men & women’s bathroom accessible for our guests that attend.
Bringing a lawn chair or two (and a small portable table if you have one) would be wise as the shelter has limited space but there are plenty of shade trees adjacent to the shelter. There will be a DJ on site as well. Again, even though the Pearl High 70s Decade Group is presenting this picnic opportunity, all PHS classes are welcome!!!
We have that shelter reserved but bring chairs and / or tables for your group as the shelter alone will not seat us all. We will also have shaded adjacent grassy areas for seats that guest bring with them.. Also remember, you can bring a grill and / or food you prepared at home and water for yourself and/ or the group you come with if you like.
Again, there will be a secure bathroom on site for men & women.
There will also be a DJ on site playing “our music”!
So fellow Tigers, come fellowship with us Pearl High Tigers of Nashville TN. on July 6, 2024 (This Saturday)

What inspired Pearl High School Alumni to monthly unite in brotherhood?
Well, they enjoy each other’s company and they are continually learning from one another. Learning about there families employment, there dilemmas and progress is one of our goals. Another goal, is designed to empower others to share a good breakfast and to promote gentle and continued friendships.
Recently, the alumni has sustained scars and bad experiences facing the pandemic and other problematic situations have occurred in our city. Therefore, our group will continue to work with PHS families and government to overcome these perplexities and bad situations.
Be reminded, of the empathetic nature and other good that we have learned at PHS(back in the day). And we will soften our way of life. Finally, we pray for resilience and continued bonding with one another, wherever we are or hope to be.
Love to all and we will see you on December 18, 2021.

From: Gwen K. Harris
Gwendolyn K. Harris, 2020 Reunion Chair &
Executive Steering Committee
Date: April 27, 2020
Subject: 2020 All Classmate Reunion Cancellation
Greeting from the 2020 All Class Reunion Chair & Committee. We hope all is well with each of you and your families, and you are practicing “STAY IN PLACE.” Your executive steering committee and I met and unanimously agreed, due to the uncertainly of the COVID-19 epidemic, to postpone and reschedule the 2020 reunion. Each chairperson and their committee members are willing to serve as the Steering Committee for the PHS next upcoming reunion.
All planning activities are on hold. All persons who have pre-registered will be issued a refund. By cancelling our reunion plans now, we have ample time to cancel all travel and hotel accommodations.
Several committee members have proposed, depending on the COVID-19 threat and if permissible, a PHS event be held in spring or fall of 2021 or reschedule for 2022, date and time to be announced. Your input will be solicited, and a new plan of action developed. We will update you on the results and announce a new reunion date. Please response to the survey which will be emailed to each of you. Check PHS website for survey info. Thanks, you for the enthusiasm you showed for the 2020 reunion festivities and we are looking forward to our next BIG Reunion CELEBRATION to be announced.
In the meantime, continue to be safe and blessed. And May God Bless These United States.
THANKS!!!

ATTENTION CLASSMATES! Class of 1970🐅🐅
I pray that everyone is well. I wanted to let everyone know and please tell others not on social media, that unfortunately due to the uncertainty of the COVID-19 situation, we will be postponing our reunion in June. We hope to have it at a later time. We realize that we are officially the "Geezer Crowd" and we do not need to be exposed to the virus.
Your Steering Committee will be teleconferencing soon. Hopefully, if you have already made travel and hotel accommodations, you will have time to cancel them. For you who have paid your registration, you will be refunded.
In the meantime, stay in touch on this page and with each other. Watch for email updates. Stay safe and healthy! Despite COVID-19, it's still hard to be a Tiger! 😉 Freida Crawley Class of 1970🐅🐅🐅

Perry Wallace’s story to reach new audiences through Nashville Film Festival
Triumph: The Untold Story of Perry Wallace, the documentary film about the challenges Wallace faced as one of Vanderbilt University’s first African American students and as a pioneer in Southeastern Conference basketball, will be featured at this year’s Nashville Film Festival.
Screenings of Triumph are scheduled Friday, May 11, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, May 12, at 3:15 p.m. as part of the festival’s lineup. The host site for the festival is Regal Hollywood Stadium 27 & RPX near Vanderbilt Health One Hundred Oaks. Tickets are on sale now. A brief Q&A with director Rich Gentile and Vanderbilt University Vice Chancellor for University Affairs and Athletics Director David Williams will follow each screening.
While the film has been screened and honored at film festivals across the country, including in Austin, Santa Barbara and Los Angeles, the Nashville Film Festival offers the Vanderbilt and Nashville communities an opportunity to learn more about a hometown trailblazer who helped pave the way for today’s college and NBA standouts.
The film was three years in the making and is narrated by Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker. It chronicles Wallace’s journey as an academically and athletically talented 17-year-old from North Nashville who was a reluctant pioneer that blazed a trail through Jim Crow racism. Vanderbilt provided financial support for the film.
When Wallace arrived on Vanderbilt’s campus in 1966 after being recruited by legendary basketball coach Roy Skinner and with the support of then-Chancellor Alexander Heard, he was among the university’s first African American students. His best friend and Pearl High School classmate Walter Murray and another newly recruited basketball teammate, Godfrey Dillard, joined him at Vanderbilt that year.
Wallace, who had come from the nurturing environment of North Nashville’s Pearl High School, the city’s only black high school for half a decade and a source of academic and athletic pride for Nashville’s black community, experienced mistreatment and isolation as one of the first black athletes at Vanderbilt. The experience left an indelible mark on him, his fellow trailblazing students, Vanderbilt and the city.
As members of the freshman basketball team, Wallace and Dillard also faced abuse and hatred on the road from fans throughout the South. Despite these challenges, Wallace made history at Vanderbilt’s Memorial Gym on Dec. 4, 1967, as the first African American athlete to play varsity basketball in the SEC.
The Nashville Film Festival screenings further efforts by Vanderbilt and others to highlight Wallace’s story and legacy.
In December, Vanderbilt and the SEC marked the 50th anniversary of Wallace’s historic 1967 basketball game and honored his and Dillard’s legacies. Wallace, who died Dec. 1 following a battle with cancer, was honored posthumously by the SEC with the Michael L. Slive Distinguished Service Award on Dec. 2 along with Dillard and the four University of Kentucky players who integrated SEC football: Nate Northington, Wilbur Hackett, Houston Hogg and the late Greg Page.
On Dec. 4, Vanderbilt hosted the premiere of Triumph on campus. The film also recently finished a limited run in theaters in New York and Los Angeles.
In January, the Vanderbilt University Alumni Association recognized Wallace as its 2017 Distinguished Alumni recipient, the highest honor bestowed to a member of the university’s alumni community, and the university honored him at an event in his adopted home of Washington, D.C., where he had worked in the Justice Department, served on the Environmental Policy Advisory Council of the EPA, and was a professor at Howard and American universities.

Civil rights pioneer, statesman and author U.S. Rep. John Lewis will be honored with the Nashville Public Library Literary Award on Saturday, Nov. 19. Lewis will discuss his New York Times best-selling graphic novel trilogy “March” during a free public lecture and book signing that same day at 10 a.m. at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Academic Magnet High School (613 17th Ave. N).
“Through the ‘March’ trilogy, Congressman Lewis is engaging a new generation of readers in civil rights history,” said Tari Hughes, president of the Nashville Public Library Foundation. “His story is inspiring and educational, and it holds an even deeper level of meaning for Nashvillians who walk the very streets where Congressman Lewis and his peers made history.”
In addition to Lewis’ being honored with the Literary Award, “March” has been selected for Nashville Reads 2017. Nashville Public Library (NPL), in partnership with the Office of the Mayor, the Nashville Public Library Foundation (NPLF), Humanities Tennessee, BookPage and Parnassus Books, hosts this yearly citywide reading initiative to encourage all Nashvillians to read and discuss a great piece of literature.
Lewis’ public lecture on Nov. 19 will be the city’s opportunity to hear him speak as the Literary Award Honoree and the 2017 Nashville Reads featured author.
“Both Nashville and the nation have been forever changed by Congressman Lewis’ unwavering moral compass, his relentless courage and his commitment to nonviolent change,” Mayor Megan Barry said. “He continues to spread his message about the need to get in ‘good trouble, necessary trouble’ to audiences far and wide, whether he’s sitting in on the U.S. House floor or crowd-surfing on late-night television.
“Congressman Lewis’ ‘March’ chronicles the enduring impact of the Nashville movement and his role in it. As we continue the critical work of building a better society for all, I can’t think of a better book for our city to read or a better person for our library to honor.”
Lewis is a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, an author and an American civil rights icon. A graduate of now American Baptist College and Fisk University, Lewis was a leader in the Nashville student-led, nonviolent sit-in movement and the Freedom Rides in the early 1960s. He was the youngest speaker at the 1963 March on Washington (and is now the only surviving speaker) and was at the forefront of the Selma to Montgomery March as part of the voting rights movement in 1965. A recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Lewis is co-author of the No. 1 New York Times best-selling graphic novel memoir trilogy “March.” The “March” series is used in schools across the country to teach the civil rights movement to the next generation of young activists, and has been selected as a First-Year common reading text at colleges and universities across the nation. Lewis is co-author of “Across That Bridge: Life Lessons and a Vision for Change” and “Walking with the Wind: A Memoir of the Movement” and is the subject of two other books written about his extraordinary life.
Often called “one of the most courageous persons the civil rights movement ever produced,” Lewis has dedicated his life to protecting human rights, securing civil liberties and building what he calls “The Beloved Community” in America. His dedication to the highest ethical standards and moral principles has won him the admiration of many of his colleagues on both sides of the aisle in the United States Congress.
NPLF is extremely grateful to its Literary Award Gala chairs, President James E.K. Hildreth, Phyllis D.K. Hildreth, J.D., Chancellor Nicholas S. Zeppos and Lydia A. Howarth; this year’s Literary Award underwriter, UBS; and Vanderbilt University as the presenting sponsor for the public lecture.
“UBS’ support for the Nashville Public Library Foundation aligns with the company’s broader commitment to education and empowering our country’s next generation of leaders,” said Jerry Johnson, Tennessee Kentucky market head for UBS Wealth Management Americas. “Few Americans have done more to unlock opportunity and create meaningful change for our nation’s young men and women than Congressman John Lewis, and so we’re honored to congratulate him on being recognized for an extraordinary life dedicated to progress and public service. UBS is proud to join the Library and Congressman Lewis in promoting a love of learning that can inspire children from all backgrounds to achieve success at every phase of their academic journeys.”
About U.S. Rep. John Lewis and “March”
U.S. Rep. John Lewis, D–Ga., is an American icon, one of the key figures of the civil rights movement. His commitment to justice and nonviolence has taken him from an Alabama sharecropper’s farm to the halls of Congress, from the segregated schoolroom to the 1963 March on Washington, and from receiving beatings from state troopers to receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom from the first African-American president of the United States of America. Lewis collaborated with co-writer Andrew Aydin and New York Times best-selling artist Nate Powell on “March,” a graphic novel trilogy that shares Lewis’ remarkable story with new generations. “March” is a vivid firsthand account of Lewis’ lifelong struggle for civil rights and human rights.
About the Nashville Public Library Foundation Literary Award
Each year, the Nashville Public Library Foundation recognizes an outstanding author with its Literary Award, which honors the author’s achievements while promoting books, literacy and reading in Nashville. Lewis is the 13th honoree. Previous winners include Jon Meacham, Scott Turow, Robert K. Massie, Margaret Atwood, John McPhee, Billy Collins, Doris Kearns Goodwin, John Irving, Ann Patchett, John Updike, David McCullough and David Halberstam.
